The sleep technology market runs on a reliable trick: it sells you a measurement and lets you assume measurement is treatment.
It is an easy assumption to make, because the data feels like progress. You now know your deep sleep was 47 minutes. What you do not have is any more deep sleep — and in some cases you now have anxiety about the number, which makes it worse.
Here are ten questions to ask before buying anything in this category. They apply to rings, watches, mattresses, lights, apps, and whatever launches next quarter.
1. Does it measure, or does it change something?
The first and most clarifying question.
Measurement devices — rings, watches, mattress sensors — tell you what happened. They change nothing on their own.
Intervention devices — a good blackout curtain, a cooling mattress topper, an air purifier, mouth tape — actually alter the conditions you sleep in.
Neither category is bad, but they are not substitutes, and the market blurs them deliberately. If you have not yet fixed the obvious things, an intervention will do more for you than a measurement. Buying a $300 ring to discover that your bedroom is too warm is an expensive route to a thermostat.
2. Will I actually act on the data?
Be honest, because this is where most tracker value is won or lost.
A tracker is worth it if you will run experiments with it: drink on Friday, look at Saturday's numbers, draw a conclusion. It is close to useless if you will glance at a score each morning and feel vaguely judged.
The genuine value of these devices is correlation — making invisible costs visible. Two drinks, a late meal, a warm room, an open mouth: each shows up in the data whether or not you felt it. 3. How accurate is it at the thing I care about?
Accuracy is not uniform across what a device claims to measure, and the marketing rarely distinguishes.
Consumer wearables are reasonably good at sleep versus wake, heart rate, and heart rate variability. They are considerably weaker at sleep staging — deep, light, and REM are estimated from movement and pulse patterns rather than brain activity, and against clinical polysomnography those estimates are frequently off.
Which matters, because sleep staging is exactly what people fixate on. If you are buying a ring to optimise a deep-sleep number, you are optimising the least reliable output it produces. (What the deep sleep figure actually means.)
4. What is the subscription?
Several major devices are sold as hardware and monetised as software. The headline price buys the ring; the data costs monthly, sometimes indefinitely, and stopping payment can reduce an expensive device to a step counter.
Work out the three-year cost, not the sticker price. That is the actual comparison.
5. What happens to my data?
You are proposing to generate a continuous, long-term record of your physiology — heart rate, breathing, movement, sometimes body temperature. That is unusually intimate data.
Worth checking: who owns it, whether it is sold or shared, whether you can export it, and what happens if the company is acquired or shuts down. Health data policies vary widely, and a company's current promises are only as durable as its ownership.
6. Is it solving a problem I actually have?
The market is excellent at manufacturing problems you did not know you had, then selling the resolution.
Before buying, name the problem in a sentence. "I wake up unrefreshed after eight hours." "I snore and my partner is suffering." "I cannot fall asleep before 1am." Then ask whether this device addresses that specific thing.

7. Have I done the free things first?
This is the question that saves the most money, and it is the one people skip.
Nothing in the sleep-tech market outperforms: getting outdoor light in the morning, holding a consistent wake time, setting a caffeine cutoff 8–10 hours before bed, dropping the bedroom to 60–67°F, cutting late alcohol, and making the room genuinely dark.

8. Does it need to be a gadget at all?
Some of the highest-return sleep interventions are not electronic and cost very little.
Blackout curtains. A cheap thermometer to find out what your bedroom actually does overnight. Breathable bedding. Earplugs. A dim night light for the 3am bathroom trip so you do not take a face full of bright light at the worst possible moment.
And on the breathing side: if you mouth-breathe overnight, that is a mechanical problem with a mechanical fix. 9. Will this make me anxious about sleep?
A real risk with a name: orthosomnia — anxiety about sleep-tracking data that then damages the sleep being tracked.
It is a documented phenomenon and a genuinely absurd trap. You buy a device to improve your sleep, you check the score each morning, a bad score sets your mood, the stress raises cortisol and sympathetic tone, and tonight is worse.
If you are prone to health anxiety or perfectionism, weigh this seriously. And if you already own one and it is doing this, the fix is simple: check the number at lunchtime instead of on waking, or take it off for a fortnight and notice whether anything actually gets worse.
10. Can I return it?
You cannot know whether a ring is comfortable, a topper suits you, or an app fits your life until you have lived with it for a couple of weeks.
A real returns window makes the experiment cheap. Its absence, on a product whose suitability is inherently individual, is worth treating as information about the seller's confidence.
The one thing no gadget does
Worth stating plainly, because it is the most consequential limitation in the category.
No consumer wearable diagnoses sleep apnea. Some flag blood-oxygen dips, which is a useful prompt. But a reassuring sleep score is not clinical evidence of anything, and the failure mode here is serious: someone with genuine apnea sees a decent score, feels reassured, and does not get tested.
If you snore loudly, have witnessed pauses in breathing, gasp awake, get morning headaches, or feel exhausted regardless of hours — that is a doctor, not a device. (How to decide whether you need a sleep study.)
If you do want a tracker
Nothing above is an argument against them. They are genuinely useful for the right person — someone who will run experiments, read trends over weeks rather than single mornings, and treat the output as information rather than a grade.

The bottom line
Ask whether it measures or changes something, whether you will act on the data, how accurate it is at the specific thing you care about, what it costs over three years, what happens to your data, what problem you are actually solving, whether you have done the free things, whether it needs to be electronic, whether it will make you anxious, and whether you can send it back.
Most people asking these honestly conclude the same thing: fix the free variables first, buy the cheap physical interventions second, and only buy a measurement device if you are the kind of person who will genuinely experiment with it.
