Sleep onset is not a switch. It is a descent, and the clearest physical marker of that descent is your core body temperature falling by roughly one to two degrees Fahrenheit.
That drop is not a side effect of falling asleep. It is part of the mechanism. Block it and you get the version of a bad night that is hardest to diagnose — not lying awake sweating, but sleeping lightly for eight hours and having no idea why you feel unrested.
The mechanism
Your core temperature runs on a daily rhythm: lowest a couple of hours before you wake, climbing through the day, peaking in the late afternoon, then falling through the evening. That evening fall is one of the signals that permits sleep to begin, and it runs alongside melatonin release rather than separately from it.
The way your body sheds that heat is counterintuitive. It dilates blood vessels in your hands and feet, dumping heat through the extremities to bring the core down. This is why warm hands and feet are a genuine sign of approaching sleepiness, and why cold feet can keep you awake — if your extremities are constricted, the heat has nowhere to go and the core stays elevated.
A warm room interferes with the whole process. There is nowhere for the heat to go, the core stays up, sleep onset takes longer, and — the part that matters most — you spend the night in lighter stages, waking more often without remembering it.
The number
The consensus range is 60–67°F (15.5–19.4°C), with 65°F (18°C) as the most commonly cited target.
That sounds cold to most people, and the reason is worth understanding: around 65°F your body can efficiently shed heat without triggering cold-defence responses like shivering or vasoconstriction. Go much lower and your body starts actively working to retain heat, which is its own kind of arousal. The range is a window, not a floor.

Age, body composition, bedding, sleepwear and hormonal state all shift the ideal, and some research suggests older adults do better slightly warmer. The protocol
Set the thermostat to drop before you go to bed, not when you go to bed. A room takes time to cool. If the drop starts when you get into bed, you are trying to fall asleep in a room that is still warm. Schedule it an hour ahead.
Take a warm shower or bath 60–90 minutes before bed. This is the intervention people find most counterintuitive and it is well supported. A warm shower dilates peripheral blood vessels; when you get out, you shed heat rapidly and core temperature drops further and faster than it otherwise would. You are using warmth to trigger cooling. The timing matters — 60 to 90 minutes ahead, not immediately before bed.
Get your hands and feet out. If your extremities are cold, warm socks can genuinely help by opening up the heat-dumping route. If you run hot, sticking a foot out from under the duvet is a surprisingly effective self-regulation strategy, and one most people already do instinctively.
Fix the bedding before you fix the thermostat. A heavy synthetic duvet in a 65°F room can trap you at an effective temperature well above that. Breathable natural fibres — cotton, linen, wool — move moisture and heat far better than polyester. Bedding is usually cheaper to change than a heating bill.
Do not train hard immediately before bed. Exercise raises core temperature for 30 to 90 minutes afterwards. Sharing a bed with someone who disagrees
This is one of the most common real-world versions of the problem, and thermostat arguments do not resolve it because the two people genuinely need different things.
The workable answer is to stop treating room temperature as the only variable. Separate duvets with different togs is the single best fix and is standard practice across Scandinavia for exactly this reason. Different bedding weight, different sleepwear, and a fan on one side of the bed all let two people occupy different microclimates in the same room.
Set the room to the cooler person's preference and let the warmer person add layers. Adding warmth is easy; shedding heat you cannot dump is not.
When it is not the room
If you are waking up hot and sweating regardless of the thermostat, the room may not be the problem.
Night sweats have a long list of causes worth taking seriously — perimenopause and menopause, thyroid problems, certain medications including some antidepressants, infection, and occasionally more serious conditions. Drenching night sweats that soak through nightwear or bedding are not a bedding problem and are worth a doctor's appointment rather than a new duvet.

Where this sits
Temperature is one of the better evening levers — comparable to light, ahead of meal timing, behind alcohol. It is worth doing, and it is unusually easy to get right once.
But it is still an evening intervention, and the night itself runs for eight hours. The single biggest variable inside those hours is how you breathe: mouth breathing keeps sympathetic tone elevated, dries the airway, and fragments sleep into micro-arousals you never remember.
