It is extremely common and it is doing two distinct things to you. Worth taking them separately, because one is easier to fix than the other.
Problem one: the light
Any light at night suppresses melatonin, and the sensitivity is higher than people assume — meaningful suppression occurs at levels well below normal room lighting.
A television produces variable, often bright light, and scene changes mean it fluctuates unpredictably. That fluctuation matters: your visual system responds to change, so a flickering light source is more arousing than a constant one.
The evidence on ambient light during sleep is stronger than most people realise. A study of older adults found that even modest light exposure during sleep was associated with higher rates of obesity, hypertension and diabetes. A separate laboratory study found that a single night sleeping in moderate room light increased overnight heart rate, reduced heart rate variability, and impaired next-morning insulin resistance compared with sleeping in near-darkness.

Problem two: the sound
Different mechanism, and more nuanced.
Constant sound can help by masking intermittent noise — traffic, neighbours, a creaking house. That is the legitimate case for a fan or a sound machine.
Television is not constant. Dialogue, music, sudden loud scenes, and — worst of all — advertising, which is deliberately produced to grab attention and is often perceptually louder than the programme around it.
And it carries meaning. Speech is processed differently from noise. Your auditory system continues some level of processing during sleep, and language is more arousing than an equivalent volume of hiss. This is why a podcast at 3am produces arousals a fan does not.
Together these produce fragmented sleep — arousals and shifts toward lighter stages that you do not remember but that cost you restoration. (Why sound machines are a weaker option than they look.)
Why people do it anyway
Worth acknowledging rather than lecturing past, because "just turn it off" ignores the actual function.
For most people the TV is doing a job: it interrupts rumination. Lying in silence with a racing mind is worse than lying there with a distraction, and the TV is the available tool.
That is a real problem and it deserves a real replacement rather than removal. (When your body is exhausted but your mind will not stop.)
Better substitutes for the same job
Audio only, on a timer. Removes the light problem entirely and keeps the distraction. Something familiar and low-stakes — a re-listen rather than something you need to follow.
A sleep timer, always. Almost every device has one. Thirty to forty-five minutes covers sleep onset and stops it running all night, which is when the damage accumulates. This is the single highest-return change if you change nothing else.
Non-narrative sound. Rain, a fan, brown noise. No language, no plot, no adverts.
Move it out of the bedroom if you can. Not always practical, and not the first thing to try.
Address the rumination directly. A written brain-dump before bed, or getting out of bed when you have been lying awake, deals with the cause rather than covering it.
If you are going to do it anyway
Realistic harm reduction:
- Sleep timer on, every night
- Brightness down as far as it will go; most TVs have a night or eco mode
- Volume down, and avoid anything with adverts
- Face it away from you, or at least away from your eyes
- Blackout the rest of the room so the TV is not adding to other light
What it does not cause
Worth saying, because it comes up: sleeping with the TV on does not cause sleep apnea, and it will not fix it either. Fragmented sleep has several causes and disrupted breathing is among the most fixable — an open mouth lets the jaw rotate back and the tongue follow it into the airway. The bottom line
The light suppresses melatonin and, on the evidence, raises overnight heart rate and impairs next-morning glucose handling after even one night. The sound fragments sleep because television is intermittent and carries language.
If you change one thing, set the sleep timer. If you change two, switch to audio-only. And if the TV is really there to stop you ruminating, replace the function rather than just removing the device.
