If your nose is fine in June and blocked every night from November, you probably do not have a series of colds. You have an indoor humidity problem.
What heating does to a bedroom
Cold outside air holds very little moisture. Bring it inside and heat it, and its relative humidity collapses. A heated bedroom in winter routinely sits between 15% and 25% relative humidity.
For comparison, comfortable is 40–50%. The Sahara averages around 25%.
You are sleeping in desert air for four months a year, and your nose is the organ that notices first.
What that does to your nose
Mucus thickens. Its job is to trap particles and get moved along by cilia toward the throat. Dry it out and it becomes viscous and sticky, the cilia struggle, and it sits where it is — which is exactly what congestion feels like.
The lining inflames. Dried epithelium becomes irritated and swollen, narrowing the passages on top of the mucus already sitting in them.
It cracks and bleeds. Winter is nosebleed season for precisely this reason. (Why, and what to do about it.)
You mouth-breathe, which dries your throat, which is why you wake in winter with a sore throat and assume you are getting ill.
Everything else gets worse too. Dust mite and pet allergens circulate more in a sealed, heated house, and viruses transmit more readily in dry air. Winter congestion is usually several things at once.
The fix, in order of effect
1. Humidify the bedroom. By some distance the most effective intervention, because it addresses the cause rather than the symptom.
Aim for 40–50%. Buy a cheap hygrometer — they cost almost nothing and take the guesswork out. Clean the humidifier properly and regularly; a dirty one aerosolises bacteria and mould into the room you sleep in, which is worse than dry air.
2. Saline before bed. A rinse or spray rehydrates the lining directly and clears thickened mucus mechanically. Drug-free, no limit, and badly underused.
3. Turn the bedroom thermostat down. A cooler room holds relative humidity better and you sleep better in it anyway — the drop in core temperature is part of how sleep onset works. (How far to drop it.)
4. A nasal gel or a little petroleum jelly just inside the nostrils, sparingly, on the worst nights.
5. Hydrate, which helps systemically though less than people hope.
Where a nasal strip fits
Mechanical rather than environmental, so it treats a different part of the problem.
A strip opens the nasal valve — the soft sidewall about a centimetre inside the nostril that draws inward on inhalation. When winter swelling has already narrowed you, you are on the steep part of the airflow-resistance curve, where a small mechanical widening returns disproportionate airflow.
So it helps more in winter than it does in summer, for the same reason a strip helps more with moderate congestion than with none. What it does not do is rehydrate anything or reduce the swelling. The taping question
Winter is when people most want tape and most often should not use it.
If dry air has congested you, do not tape. Taping assumes your nose is a fully adequate airway, and a winter-blocked nose is not one. Fix the humidity first; then, on nights you can sit up and breathe comfortably through your nose for a full minute, Titan's tape is reasonable again. (The rule in full.)
Handled the other way round, a humidifier makes taping more comfortable through winter, not less — which is the actual sequence.
The bottom line
Your nose gets worse in winter because your bedroom drops to desert humidity, not because you keep catching things.
Buy a hygrometer, humidify to 40–50%, rinse with saline before bed, and turn the thermostat down. A strip adds a useful mechanical margin on top — and if the dryness has already blocked you, that is a night to skip the tape.
